SAMPLE EXERCISE: Leave It
Your puppy is a naturally curious scavenger only too happy to gobble up everything from bones to pills to poop, so the Leave It command is the key to their safety and your sanity.
Step 1: Stand up. It’s best if your puppy is standing or sitting. Wear shoes—no sandals, flip-flops, or bare feet.
Step 2: Take a treat from your pouch. Show your puppy that you have a delicious treat in your hand, and let them watch you as put that treat under your shoe and step on it, fully covering it. Your puppy must see you do this and understand that you left a treat under your shoe and that it is no longer in your hand. If they know it’s there, they will start pawing at your shoe and sniffing around, trying to figure out how to get at the covered treat. If they don’t try to get at the treat, they might have missed the hide, so move your foot off to the side and tap the ground near the treat to direct their attention to it. Then quickly cover it with your shoe before they can snag it.
Step 3: Say Leave It once and only once in a happy tone of voice. They will keep trying to get at the treat, getting more and more frustrated. They will look up at you in confusion.
Step 4: Then exclaim Yes and give them a treat from your hand. Do not under any circumstances give them the one from under your shoe.
Step 5: Take your foot off the treat. Tap the ground with your foot so they can see the treat is visible again, then quickly, before they can get to the treat, cover it back up with your foot. Now repeat Steps 3 and 4.
Step 6: Repeat Step 5 a few more times. Your puppy is getting quicker and should now rapidly be giving up on the foot treat and looking up at you or ignoring the treat altogether.
